(The Power of) Music – Saving Lives Since Forever!

How many times has music been a life-saver? Those long cab-rides to work, those exhausting metro-rides back home from work, every time you hear someone mouth absolute BS at work or elsewhere (that includes making plans you do NOT want to be a part of!)..forget all that! Have you been to a party where they play cringe-worthy songs over and over that you felt like plugging in your earphones and rocking out to your own shit?
I can vouch for the fact that music has helped me get through horrible office days, and saved me the trouble of having to pretend to be a ‘YES MAN’ way too often. Music, in fact, has helped me write way better (I write full-time, hence) and aided a great deal in keeping my anxiety levels low. Also, I cannot emphasize how much music has become integral to work-outs and jogs these days. It is, in a lot of ways, an avenue to vent your frustrations. Haven’t you often felt the lyrics of a song reflect the inherent sadness present in your daily routines so well?

“If people take anything from my music, it should be motivation to know that anything is possible as long as you keep working at it and don’t back down.” – Eminem

As far as facts go, music contributes to the reduction in the stress hormone (known as ‘cortisol), thereby making you a happier person overall. Also, has anyone told you yet that listening to music can boost your immune system? Switch on that car stereo, radio, iPod, or the music player on your phone and let it do its job – all you got to do is head-bang, tap your feet, snap your fingers, or clap – because that’s how we roll!🎶
Some might argue that listening to loud music can only make you feel worse than you already are, given an adverse situation. But if you are indeed a loud-music person, just listen to whatever suits your mood. Don’t we all have different playlists for different days? For instance, lately, I’ve realized that Dubstep can help me write faster, Hip-hop can help me be more creative, Rock/Metal can help me do formatting better, and Country/Blues can help me edit images better (and likewise, for each profession).
The first tab I open at work or at home is YouTube/SoundCloud/Spotify. Why? Cuz I like to prep myself for the shit-storm that’s brewing. Your week could very well turn out to be a sequence of murky Mondays, terrible Tuesdays, whiny Wednesdays, torturous Thursdays, and fucked-up Fridays. Music is that imaginary side-kick who’s always by your side, telling you that it’s okay, and never letting you go.

“One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” – Bob Marley

We’ve had our days when all we could think of, in an exam hall, was just the chorus of a song that you listened to, the previous night. The more you’d try to get it out of your head, the louder it’d play in your ears. Music can heal wounded and depressed souls in a way nothing else can. Whether it be playing (an instrument) or listening, music can do wonders to people suffering from stress. It can miraculously convert bad energy into good. When John Lennon wrote the lyrics to the song ‘Imagine’, he probably wished that the world was a better place for everyone.

“Music can change the world because it can change people.” – Bono
